Acupuncture FAQ

Does Acuouncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles cause very little discomfort, usually does not hurt much, but the experience can vary person to person. The needles used in acupuncture are pre-sterilized, disposable and much thinner then needles used for injections or blood draws.

You might feel a brief prick, pinch or a dull ache. Some people feel a mild aching sensation on one needle, when it brings circulation to help release a muscle. Most people fall asleep and are quite relaxed during their treatment.

How does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture uses disposable, pre-sterilized needles that are inserted into a specific point on the body. Today's science shows that when inserting a needle large amounts of ciculation goes to the site of needle, which can trigger the release of the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins and enkephalins.

The needle can stimulate through the nerves, creating a nervous sytem response that can balance hormones, and relieve pain. Acupuncture may encourage the body's healing process in areas affected by injury. Acupuncture can also block pain receptors, through something called the Gate Theory, which suggests of sending multiple signals to the brain at one time.

How many treatment will I need?

This depends on the condition that is being treated. Some issues can be resolved in one treatment if it is acute or a relatively new problem. Long term problems such as stroke or spinal cord injury or complicated issue can take a series of treatments. After your initial assessment appointment your practitioner can make an individulaized treatment plan to help you get back to your best.

What should i wear to my appointment?

Wear or bring with you athletic clothing that is comfortable and loose, such as a t-shirt, tank top or shorts. Something that can be rolled up to elbows, knees or depending on area of concern. Avoid restrictive clothing, we supply clinic shorts if you do not have appropriate clothing for the treatment.
